Potato spiral

South Australia is known as the Festival State, and as the capital Adelaide plays host to many of the larger events such as Adelaide Fringe and the Adelaide Film Festival. ‘Mad March’ is the busiest with festivals overlapping each other, but other events occur throughout the year.

Last weekend was the Adelaide Street Food Festival. Vendors set up their food trucks or marquees in a block off Flinders Street. Both days of the event were sunny and the people who came were packed so closely together the place flowed like a river. Delicious smells wafted down the street all the way to East Terrace. Visitors could try various ethnic foods or carnival snacks like the potato spiral. No seats were available, so people mingled in the street or carried their finds to nearby parks for a picnic.

The potato spiral vendor was the most popular with the queue trailing past two neighboring stalls. The man taking the money also spiraled the potatoes and threw them into a bin on the ledge of the food truck. The man working the fryer inside the truck had perspiration beading on his forehead as he pulled potatoes onto pokers, dipped them, and dropped them into boiling oil. Poker chips given by the cashier were exchanged for the delicious treat, which could then be covered in toppings of the buyer’s choosing.
